(John 4:9-10)
I. Concentration: on Samaritan Woman questions her worth.
- The Samaritan woman said to him “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. (v.9a)
- “How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans) (v.9b)
- Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, . . . “ (v.10a)
- “. . . you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (v.10b)
II. Meditation: on thirsting no more.
- Jesus, thirsty and tired from traveling, stops and sits at a well (“Jacob’s Well”) in Sychar, Samaria; He asks a woman for a drink; she is surprised that He, a Jew, is even speaking to her, a woman and a Samaritan.
- All Samaritans know they are despised by the Jews; how strange that this man asks her to draw water for Him – are you sure you want ME to give YOU a drink?
- Perhaps Jesus feels it is a shame that this Samaritan woman doesn’t already know about the gift of Jesus Christ from God and if she knew about it she would already know that God’s son is the one who is asking for water.
- All she had to do is ask Jesus … and she would be given eternal life.
III. Revelation: on accepting our worthiness.
- How unworthy we can feel when we are asked to serve our Lord; just as John the Baptist said “… the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” (Luke 3:16b)
- We are sinners and need to repent and ask forgiveness – then we need to forgive ourselves and do what God is asking us to do realizing He will give us the knowledge, the strength and the ability.
- We need to accept that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, ask Him to be our Savior.
- Then we need to realize that we have asked for and received the precious gift that God has given to us … eternal life; we didn’t and could never earn it, it was given.
IV. Application: As a Christian, I need to:
- Get over my feelings of being unworthy; when I feel unworthy I am denying His works within me, the gifts and strength He has given to me.
- Accept that, yes, I am a sinner, but I have repented, asked for and received forgiveness; continue to ask forgiveness for my new sins; focus on what God has in store for me.
- Be happy that I now know the gift has been given to me – it is all within my reach.
- Wait for the day I am called home, but in the meantime continue on the path God has set before me.
