Matthew 19:9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
Romans 7:2-3 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
1 Corinthians 7:39 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.
Proverbs 7 is very clear in it's warnings to men to stay away from an adulteress.
We don't really need to be reminded that an Adulteress does not act alone. However, in this story, only one person stands accused . . . the woman. We are never told her name. There is no mention of the man - nor is he brought forward to meet his accusers.
There are several point to be made in this story - here are a few:
- The woman (alone) is being accused.
- Jesus is being tested by the Pharisees and teachers of the law
- Jesus tests the crowd - he challenges each person in the Temple courtyard that morning to see that THEY, TOO, are sinners - their own ways need mending.
- We are being taught the right way for Christians to respond to sinners - it urges us to examine ourselves FIRST - an extension of Matthew 7:1-5 telling us to take the log out of our own eye so we can clearly see ourselves as sinners.
- It does not condemn the sinner, but calls the sinner to change - to be saved.
