Our Spiritual Director pointed us to a Scripture that is often missed and not often spoken about or part of a Communion service. I, too, have missed this and wanted to share it with you.
In 1 Corinthians Paul is writing to the church in Corinth. In 11:27 - 29 he writes these words:
27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.
What does this mean? We should take an inventory of ourselves / our sins (examine) before we take Communion. We should lift them up (our sins) to the Lord before we go to the altar to take Communion in remembrance of Jesus.
Many of our denominations offer Communion weekly / monthly or even daily. It is important that we do not take this for granted or turn it into a thoughtless routine.
Reading and understanding this Scripture was very meaningful to me and I hope it is to you as well.
